Gettysburg tops Mary Washington
Church scores career-high seven goals to lead Bullets
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Top-ranked Gettysburg didn’t miss a beat in its season opener, scoring the final 13 goals in a 17-4 rout of No. 17 Mary Washington Thursday evening.
Gettysburg (1-0), the defending champions was led by senior Hannah Church who posted career bests with seven goals and nine points. Sophomore Loren Pruitt tied a personal mark with four goals, while junior Lindsey Robinson added two goals and three assists.
Mary Washington (1-1) jumped out to an early lead with Keller Torrey tossing in two goals and Jenna Petrucelli adding another for a 3-0 advantage. The lead was short-lived as the Bullets stormed back with the next four goals, three by Church, to regain the upper hand.
The Eagles forced a temporary tie with 21:45 left in the opening period before Gettysburg opened the floodgates. Pruitt started the run and Robinson added a pair of goals. Church capped the first-half scoring with her fourth goal of the period to lift the visitors to an 8-4 lead at the half.
The defense completely locked down Mary Washington in the second half with the offense throwing in nine more tallies.
Sophomores Kelsey Markiewicz and Katie Blumenthal each added a pair of goals, with the former corralling a career-high eight draw controls.
Junior Alex Casey led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Coleman posted five saves in the victory.
The 13-goal victory was Gettysburg’s best in a season opener since beating Kenyon 4-1 to kick off the 1997 campaign.
