Eighth-ranked NYU takes team title on Friday
No. 1 North Central (Ill.) at Eagle Invitational
WARRENVILLE, Ill. -- Putting forth an impressive display of pack running, North Central (Ill.) scored a second consecutive win at St. James Farm on Friday, placing nine runners among the top 17 overall finishers and placing first in a 17-team field at the Benedictine Eagle Invitational.
With the bulk of the athletes which will compete at next week's University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational taking the week off from racing, the top-ranked Cardinals still managed to secure a winning total of 39 points to put them ahead of runner-up Wheaton (46) and third-place Saint Joseph's (Ind.).
Ryan Smith of Goshen College (Ind.) made off with the individual title, placing first on the 8,000-meter (five-mile) course with a time of 25 minutes, 27.93 seconds. North Central secured its victory by following close behind with its five scoring runners completing the course within 11 seconds of each other.
Kevin McMahon and Zach Plank were the first Cardinals to hit the finish line, finishing fifth (25:49.43) and sixth (25:50.16), respectively. Matt Muth placed eighth (25:53.72) with teammate Ken Hoffman hot on his heels in ninth (25:54.06), while Juliano Lodi closed out North Central's scoring in 11th (26:00.62). Brent Gaither (12th, 26:04.33) and Ryan Thompsen (14th, 26:09.22) rounded out the Cardinals' varsity seven for the meet.
No. 8 NYU at Metropolitan Championships
BRONX, N.Y. -- NYU had a dominating performance at the Metropolitan Championship on Friday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY.
Violet runners finished one through three, with Dylan Karten crossing the tape first in the 124-person race.
All five NYU scorers finished among the top 10.
Finishing second was Ross Wistar (26:17.08), while Sebastian Oja took third (26:17.53).
