Spurrier to take to skies in F-16

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier will get in an F-16 at McEntire Joint National Guard Base on Thursday and take to the skies.

Spurrier will sit in the rear cockpit of a two-seat training version of the fighter jet, the school said Tuesday. The ride will last about one hour.

Orientation and familiarization flights are authorized by the Air Force for distinguished community leaders.

Spurrier is expected to fly with a combat pilot out of the 169th Fighter Wing of the South Carolina Air National Guard.

Clemson coach Tommy Bowden took part in a similar flight two years ago. ``This is something not a lot of people get to do,'' Bowden said then. ``That's part of the excitement.''

Before the flight, Bowden teased of bombing the Gamecocks' Williams-Brice Stadium.

Bowden said when they flew over it, ``I pushed the button, but they were firing blanks.''
