Mountain West Conference News and Notes

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sports Network)

AIR FORCE: Asher Clark ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns as he led the Falcons to a 45-17 win over the UNLV Rebels in league play on Saturday. The Falcons scored a total of six touchdowns on the ground and gained 431 yards on 71 attempts, while Tim Jefferson converted 8-of-13 passes for 126 yards in the triumph as well. The Falcons close out the regular season this coming weekend with a trip to Provo to face the BYU Cougars. Last year, Air Force lost by two touchdowns (38-24) against the Cougars, allowing BYU to move to a commanding 27-6 advantage in the all-time series.

BYU: Against a team that had not won a game all season and owned one of the longest losing streaks in the nation, the Cougars really made it hard on themselves as they squeezed out a 24-19 win against New Mexico on Saturday. Max Hall completed 21-of-33 passes for 314 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Cougars as they struggled in the slim victory. Perhaps most unusual was BYU's lack of an effective rushing attack, gaining a mere 41 net yards on 23 attempts. The Cougars have two straight home games to close out the regular season, beginning with a date against Air Force this weekend. Last year BYU, which is now ranked 19th in the latest AP Poll, posted a 38-24 win over the academy, which means the Cougars now hold a sizeable advantage in the all-time series.

COLORADO STATE: Since defeating Colorado, Weber State and Nevada to open the 2009 campaign, the Rams have hit the skids and are still waiting to register just their fourth win of the season. A losing streak of seven in a row has everyone in Fort Collins scratching their heads as they try to figure out the problem with the program. Having a weak defense is part of it certainly, with the team allowing 249.4 ypg through the air and 31.2 ppg which ranks the school 101st in the nation following action on Saturday. The Rams hit the road for their final away game of the season this weekend, taking on New Mexico in conference action in Albuquerque. Last year, CSU picked up a 20-6 victory at home in Fort Collins against the Lobos, giving the Rams a larger lead in the all-time series.

NEW MEXICO: The Lobos got a three-yard touchdown run from Donovan Porterie in the first quarter to move out to a 7-0 lead against nationally-ranked BYU on Saturday and even though UNM played the Cougars tough, it was the visitors who claimed the 24-19 win in Albuquerque. Porterie finished 28-of-44 for 272 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the signal-caller was also taken down for five sacks as the team suffered its 14th loss in a row (second-longest slide in the nation). UNM managed to stay close by shutting down BYU's running game, limiting the visitors to a mere 41 yards on 23 chances. The Lobos play their final home game of the season this coming weekend as they entertain the Colorado State Rams. Last season, CSU posted a 20-6 win over UNM, pushing the Rams to a 32-24 advantage in the all-time series.

SAN DIEGO STATE: David Lindley saw his streak of consecutive games with at least one passing touchdown come to an end on Saturday night as he and the Aztecs were taken out by Wyoming in a 30-27 final. Lindley, who had delivered with at least one passing score in each of the last 15 outings and had six alone in the win against Colorado State last month, converted 18-of-29 passes for an even 200 yards, while Brandon Sullivan accounted for 105 yards and two TDs on 18 rushing attempts. With the team's home schedule now exhausted, the Aztecs hit the road for back-to-back contests, beginning with a meeting against Utah this Saturday. Last year, SDSU was completely blown away in a 63-14 outcome against the Utes, the decision providing Utah with a 15-12-1 edge in the all-time series.

TCU: The team with the best chance to bust up the BCS from the outside, the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs dialed up the offense against Utah in one of the marquee matchups this past Saturday, winning 55-28 at home in Fort Worth. Andy Dalton converted 17-of-29 pass attempts for 207 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted once as the Frogs focused their energy on the ground where they accounted for 342 yards and five scores. Edward Wesley took the lead coming out of the backfield as he gained a game-high 137 yards and scored once on just 12 attempts, while Matthew Tucker tallied a pair of rushing TDs as well for the fifth-best rushing team in the nation (252.1 ypg). The Horned Frogs take to the road for the final time in the regular season this weekend, challenging Wyoming in Laramie. Last year, TCU whipped up on the Cowboys in a 54-7 final, advancing TCU to a 3-2 edge in the all-time series.

UNLV: Mike Clausen ran for a touchdown and Omar Clayton tossed another for the Rebels, but by no means was that enough for the team to compete against Air Force on Saturday in a 45-17 road loss. UNLV generated just 147 rushing yards on 38 attempts, compared to w whopping 431 yards and six touchdowns surrendered to the opposition. The combination of Clayton and Clausen accounted for 13-of-23 for 135 yards, the former being sacked once and having a pass intercepted. The Rebels finally catch a break in the action this week and will be on hiatus until hosting San Diego State in the regular-season finale on November 28th. Last year, the Aztecs doubled up UNLV in a 42-21 decision, which means SDSU now owns an 11-7 edge in the all-time series. Off the field it was decided that head coach Mike Sanford would not be around past this season, his fifth with the Rebels. Sanford has a record of just 15-43 to this point at UNLV and has won only seven of 39 Mountain West tests over the years.

UTAH: Expected to give the Horned Frogs at least a little bit of a fight on Saturday night, the Utes were instead throttled in a 55-28 final on the road. Snapping a six-game win streak, Utah dropped seven spots in the latest AP Poll to No. 23 as Shaky Smithson took two of his five carries into the end zone and quarterback Jordan Wynn hit on 16-of-32 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown, but he was also picked off once and sacked two times by a TCU defense that allowed just 65 yards on 27 rushing attempts. The Utes host their final team of the season this weekend when San Diego State comes to Salt Lake City. Utah crushed SDSU last season, 63-14, opening up a 15-12-1 advantage in the all- time series in the process.

WYOMING: After posting single field goals in both the first and second quarters on Saturday, the Cowboys exploded in the fourth with an astounding 24 points to push them over the top in a 30-27 victory versus San Diego State on the road. Kicker Ian Watts knocked through three field goals on the night, none more important than his 43-yard boot with just 23 seconds remaining in regulation to earn the visitors the win. Austyn Carta-Samuels converted 16- of-22 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown, adding another score on one of his 13 rushing attempts. The Pokes gained 200 yards on the ground and 446 yards of total offense as they snapped a three-game slide. Next on the radar for the Cowboys is TCU in Laramie. The Horned Frogs completely dominated Wyoming a year ago in an ugly 54-7 decision, giving TCU a 3-2 edge in the series.
