DETROIT - The White squad recorded an 18-6 victory over the Gold team in the annual football spring game Saturday afternoon at Adams Field.
Taking over at their own 23 to start their third possession of the game, the White team went 77 yards in nine plays with sophomore quarterback Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio / Harvey) tossing a 19-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) on a second down play.
A couple of big plays on the drive included an 11-yard run by freshman Toney Davis (Muskegon Heights, Mich. / Muskegon); a 17-yard pass play from Mohner to junior tight end Greg Oberstaedt (Whitmore Lake, Mich.); and a 13-yard pass play from Mohner to junior wide receiver Donald Brown (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield).
On Gold's first possession of the second half, senior Zack George (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) was intercepted by sophomore Mazen Jaddou (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice).
After the White squad turned the ball over on downs, freshman Nick Moeller (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) had an 11-yard pass play to senior Travis Campbell (Gahanna, Ohio / Westerville North). An eight-yard run by sophomore Durrell Pettaway (Toledo, Ohio / Bowsher) preceded a 74-yard touchdown pass to freshman Dominique Maybanks (Muskegon, Mich.) from Moeller to knot the game at six.
Midway through the fourth quarter, White squad's Nick Thomas (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) sacked George on a third-down play. White then took over at its own 26. Two Davis runs for a total of 21 yards were sandwiched around a 38-yard pass play from Mohner to Burrell. On a 1st-and-10 from the Gold 15, Davis scored on a run up the middle.
On the ensuing possession, Gold was stopped on a fourth-and-one near midfield. Following a run by junior Jordan Kidd (Milford, Mich.), Mohner found Burrell for seven yards, then the pair hooked up on a 34-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring.
Freshman Tarek Flowers (Remus, Mich. / Chippewa Hills) rushed for a game-high 90 yards on 10 carries to lead the Gold team. Pettaway added 29 yards on 10 rushes, with Maybanks carrying once for 15 yards.
David led the White team with 85 yards on 11 carries and the one touchdown. Jeff Williams had the other two rushing attempts for the White squad.
Mohner completed 12-of-21 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception for the Team White.
Moeller and George shared time under center for Team Gold. Moeller was 5-of-10 for 124 yards and one score, while George completed 2-of-9 for 21 yards with a pair of interceptions.
Burrell led Team White with four receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Brown hauled in five passes for 46 yards, with Oberstaedt having two catches for 27 yards. Kidd had one reception for six yards.
Maybanks finished with three catches for 102 yards and one touchdown to lead Team Gold. Campbell had three receptions for 28 yards and Pettaway had one catch for 15 yards.
Interceptions in the contest were recorded by Jaddou, junior Jordan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain) and freshman Kevin Buford-Wilson (Euclid, Ohio).
A total of eight sacks were made in the contest with freshman linebacker Ed Viverette (Southfield, Mich. / Brother Rice) and senior defensive end Daunte Akra (Detroit, Mich. / Kettering) each recording a pair.
Also tallying sacks were junior linebacker Zachary Easterly (Southfield, Mich. / Cass Tech), sophomore defensive tackle Greg Hasse (Northville, Mich.), junior defensive end Jon Robinson (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) and Thomas.
Wayne State will begin the 2010 campaign with home non-league contest against Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 4.
After beginning the GLIAC portion of the schedule with a pair of road contests (Sept. 11 at Tiffin and Sept. 18 at Michigan Tech0, WSU's league home opener will take place on Sept. 25 against GLIAC newcomer Ohio Dominican.
