AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn football team held its fifth practice of
the spring season Wednesday morning, working out for more than two hours
under sunny skies at the Athletics Complex practice fields.
Wednesday’s practice included more of a focus on special teams than
previous workouts. The Tigers also continued to work on individual and
position drills, and mixed in a heavy dose of team work.
Following practice, defensive coordinator Ted Roof said that he has
noticed a marked improvement from the Tigers this spring, compared to
last year when the team was learning a new system under a new staff.
“I think that we’re a lot further ahead at this point than we were
last year,†said Roof. “I think it’s the continuity with the
staff, it’s the second year in the system with the players, and
we’re working to get it better now that they’ve heard it and the
newness of things has worn off.â€
Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn agreed with that assessment and has
noticed similar improvement with his offensive unit.
“The veterans definitely have a better understanding, as they
should,†said Malzahn. “Our expectations are a lot higher, though.
We’re just trying to focus on the little things. We’re trying to be
demanding on the guys and strain them so they can be as good as they can
be.â€
