UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond Football head coach Latrell Scott has announced the signing of 17 student-athletes who have submitted a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Richmond and play for the Spiders next season. The class includes three local standouts and eight from the Commonwealth.
This incoming class, which began when former USC QB Aaron Corp announced his transfer to Richmond in January, represents Scott's first since taking the reigns at Richmond in December.
"This our first Signing Day as a staff and it's a very exciting time for us and the University of Richmond," said Scott at a press conference this afternoon at the Robins Center. "We began a new era today. What we did with this class was address the areas we needed to keep this team heading in the right direction. We have a great tradition here, have won a lot of ball games and we just needed to add pieces that fit. I feel we did that with this class."
Of the 17 players that signed their NLI Wednesday, three are local standouts - DT Rashad Winston and S DeShawn Holmes from Highland Springs High and S Jerel Harrison from Varina High. In addition to the eight from Virginia, there are two each from the high-school hotbeds of North Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania, and one each from California, Michigan, Maryland and New Jersey.
Richmond is coming off an 11-2 season that saw the Spiders claim the 2009 CAA Football Championship. Over the last three years, the Spiders have compiled a 35-8 record with a National Championship in 2008 and CAA titles in 2007 and 2009. The 2010 campaign marks Richmond's first in the new $25-million Robins Stadium on campus.
