GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Bobby Lamb announced today the signing of 13 recruits to national letters of intent and the addition of a transfer to the Paladin football program.
The Paladinsâ€™ recruiting class, which features eight defensive players, five offensive performers, and one placekicker/punter, includes four recruits from Georgia, four from Florida, three from South Carolina, and one each from Alabama and Tennessee. In addition, the Paladins inked the programâ€™s first Canadian born player.
Among Furmanâ€™s additions are 4A first team all-state Shrine Bowl MVP linebacker Malcolm Howard (Goose Creek, S.C./Goose Creek H.S.), 4A first team all-state center Charles Emert (Statesboro, Ga./Statesboro H.S.), 6A Central Florida all-star defensive tackle Danny Palmer (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lake Brantley H.S.), and 2B Florida Coaches Association All-Star Game running back Hank McCloud (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic H.S.).
Howard, a first team all-state selection by the Associated Press and finalist for South Carolina Mr. Football, registered 158 tackles in leading Goose Creek to a 10-4 record and appearance in the state playoff semi-finals in 2009.
Emert, one of Furmanâ€™s first commitments, garnered Atlanta Journal-Constitution first team all-state accolades in 2009 and participated in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game.
Palmer led all Florida defensive tackles with 72 stops in 2009 and was rated the 40th best player in Central Florida by the Orlando Sentinel and among the stateâ€™s Top 10 defensive tackles by Scout.com
McCloud, meanwhile, rushed for 1,767 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior in leading Tampa Catholic to an 11-2 record and state runner-up finish. Included in his season was a 193-yard performance in the state championship game against Bolles.
In addition to Howard, Furmanâ€™s other Palmetto state signees include a pair of South Carolina North-South All-Stars, safety Marcus McMorris (Newberry/Newberry H.S.) and plackekicker/punter Ray Early (Darlington/Darlington H.S.).
The Paladins also added transfer defensive end Cameron Mason from Navy. Already enrolled in school, he will take part in spring practice and has four seasons of eligibility remaining.
Furman returns 13 starters off its 2009 squad, which posted a 6-5 record and 5-3 Southern Conference mark.
