DECORAH, Iowa - St. Olaf scored 21 straight points to erase a 10-point second half deficit and defeat Luther College 28-23 on Saturday afternoon in a season-opening football victory.
The Oles trailed 17-7 before a pair of Dan Dobson touchdown passes gave St. Olaf a 21-17 lead. Moments later, Michael Thai scored on a 30-yard run for a 28-17 advantage.
Luther responded with a three-play, 80-yard drive to cut the St. Olaf lead to five with 1:41 remaining. The Norse then recovered the ensuing onside kick. Luther ran three plays before the Oles' Collin Brown picked up a sack on fourth-and-one to end the Luther drive and seal the win.
Dobson was 17-for-30 for 241 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He found Stephen Asp twice for scores, a 24-yard strike in the first quarter and a 19-yard score with 12:01 left in the final quarter.
Thai rushed for 91 yards on 16 carries.
The victory is the Oles' 18th straight in non-conference play, including nine against Luther, dating to 2004. St. Olaf plays at DePauw University next Saturday.
