ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine football team fell to No. 6 Villanova by the score of 48-18 on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Stadium in Orono, Maine. With the loss, Maine falls to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in CAA play while Villanova improves to 4-2 and 2-1 in conference play.
The Wildcats were able to get two scores in the first quarter, both courtesy of Chris Whitney who threw for one and ran for the other to take a 14-0 lead into the second quarter..
The Black Bears answered in the second quarter when Brian Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) notched a 28-yard field goal. Maine continued to ramp up the pressure as Jerron McMillian (Hillside, N.J.) had a sack on the ensuing Villanova drive that led the Wildcats to punt the ball back to the Black Bears.
However, Villanova would score twice more on Chris Whitney touchdown passes to take a 27-3 lead into halftime.
Maine would force the Wildcats to go three-and-out on their first possession of the third quarter, and would respond when Warren Smith (Forked River, N.J.) converted a 20-yard touchdown pass to Derek Session (Baltimore, Md.). Smith would also notch the two-point conversion to Jeff Falvey (Cicero, N.Y.) to cut the Villanova lead to 27-11.
Villanova would respond with scores at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter to take a lead that Maine could not overcome.
Maine’s Pushawn Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) would finish the scoring on an 18-yard pass from Chris Treister (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) with 5:13 left in the game.
Smith completed 18-of-31 passes for 206 yards and a score while Brown finished with 48 yards rushing.
McMillian finished with eight tackles while Donte Dennis (Rahway, N.J.) who notch a game-high 12 tackles, including a tackle-for-loss.
Villanova would finish with 559 yards of offense while Maine ended with 330 yards.
Maine returns to action on Saturday at Rhode Island.
