GLASSBORO, N.J. – Tim Hagerty threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kevin DelleDonne on fourth down with 6:40 remaining as Rowan rallied for a 20-17 victory over nationally 19th-ranked Cortland. The Profs improve to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC. Cortland suffered its first loss of the season and is now 5-1 both overall and in league play.
Cortland took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a Justin Autera (Mahopac) 43-yard touchdown run and a 36-yard TD pass from Dan Pitcher (Cortland) to Kadeem Miller (Niskayuna). Pitcher has now thrown a TD pass in eight consecutive games, one shy of tying the school record. Autera scored his 14th touchdown in six games this fall.
Rowan got on the board late in the first half on a 2-yard fade pass from Hagerty to Marcus Lee on 4th-and-goal at the 2-yard line. That touchdown ended Cortland’s three-game shutout streak and was the first time the Red Dragons allowed a point in 229 minutes, 48 seconds of game play.
Cortland extended the lead to 17-7 on a Marc Corrado (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) 26-yard field goal with 9:14 left in the third. The host Profs closed to within 17-13 on Steve Hevalow’s 38-yard touchdown run with 7:31 left in the third, but the extra-point attempt was blocked by Lou Crispo (Eastchester).
The Red Dragons had a chance to re-gain a seven-point lead, but a Corrado 31-yard field goal attempt with 1:36 left in the third was blocked by David Green. Rowan blocked two Cortland field goals in the contest. An interception with 7:28 left in the fourth by Rowan’s Dean Hammel set up the Profs at the Cortland 19-yard line. Four plays later, on 4th-and-8, DelleDonne caught the go-ahead TD pass on a post pattern. Cortland’s next drive ended with another interception, this one by Mark Kinney. The Red Dragons had another drive with 3:33 left end on downs.
The teams combined for nine turnovers – Rowan lost the ball five times (three fumbles, two interceptions) and Cortland coughed up the ball four times (three interceptions, one fumble). Rowan finished with a slight 239-223 advantage in total yardage.
Hevalow finished with 27 rushes for 139 yards. Hagerty was 10-of-22 for 95 yards, with DelleDonne and Lee catching four passes each. Hammel lead the team with 10 tackles, 3.5 for losses, and an interception.
Autera rushed for 83 yards on 23 carries and caught four passes for 49 yards. Pitcher completed 15-of-33 passes for 138 yards but was picked off three times. Anthony Giuliano (Thornwood/Westlake) had four catches for 39 yards.
Evan Wyler (Warwick/Warwick Valley) led Cortland with 10 tackles. Cody Allen (Medina), Crispo and Bill Smith (Mahopac) made nine tackles apiece. Joe Lopez (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) and Tom Lewis (Elma/Iroquois) each intercepted passes and D.J. Romano (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) broke up four passes.
Cortland travels to Morrisville on Saturday, Oct. 23, for a 1 p.m. NJAC contest.
